What if I wanted to use SAFE as a back end / storage component for web applications that work on the regular internet?
Has anyone explored this?

The plans were to have a “mountable” filesystem which accesses your SAFE storage.
So I guess the answer to your question is that it has been explored in the sense that SAFE can look like a filesystem to an OS
